Gummy Smile Treatments: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a gummy smile?

A gummy smile refers to excessive visibility of the gum area when smiling or laughing, due to overactivity in the lip elevator muscles (the levator labii superioris, levator labii superioris alaeque nasi, and zygomaticus minor).

Gummy smiles can be caused by a range of factors, including hyperactivity of the muscles involved in lip elevation, overgrowth of the gums, or irregular teeth size or shape.

Are there any side effects of gummy smile injections?

Muscle relaxant injections are a safe and proven treatment option for reducing the appearance of a gummy smile. Side effects are rare – and when they do occur, they’re minor and temporary.

In a small number of cases, minor bruising will occur at the site of the injection. This is easily concealed with makeup and will subside within a few days.

You may notice some asymmetry straight after your treatment, but this should correct itself within around three weeks post-treatment. In very rare cases, overtreatment may occur.

Can a gummy smile be corrected with a teeth-straightening treatment like Invisalign?

Teeth straightening treatments such as braces or Invisalign are not designed to correct gummy smiles, as they do not address muscle overactivity.

In fact, as teeth straightening devices can irritate sensitive gums, they can actually lead to thicker gums which worsen the appearance of a gummy smile.

How do gummy smile injections work?

To address the overactivity of the lip elevator muscles responsible for your gummy smile, our cosmetic doctors will use targeted muscle relaxant injections to relax specific muscles.

In most cases, muscle relaxants will be placed into the Levator Labii Superiorus Alaeque Nasalis (LLSAN muscles), located on either side of the nose. By reducing the activity of these muscles, your smile will no longer have a gummy appearance.

How long will my gummy smile treatments results last?

The results of your gummy smile injections will generally last for 3-4 months or even longer in some cases. It’s important to note that this can vary from person to person. Once the injection begins to wear off after this period, you can come back for another treatment in order to keep your gummy smile at bay.

When will I see the results of my gummy smile treatment?

You’ll notice a correction in the gummy appearance of your smile within 3-4 days of your gummy smile treatment.

Are gummy smile injections painful?

A gummy smile procedure involves minimal pain and discomfort. A numbing cream will be applied prior to your treatment and your doctor will apply an ice pack straight after the injections to reduce the risk of bruising.
