A gummy smile refers to excessive visibility of the gum area when smiling or laughing, due to overactivity in the lip elevator muscles (the levator labii superioris, levator labii superioris alaeque nasi, and zygomaticus minor).

Gummy smiles can be caused by a range of factors, including hyperactivity of the muscles involved in lip elevation, overgrowth of the gums, or irregular teeth size or shape.

Teeth straightening treatments such as braces or Invisalign are not designed to correct gummy smiles, as they do not address muscle overactivity.

In fact, as teeth straightening devices can irritate sensitive gums, they can actually lead to thicker gums which worsen the appearance of a gummy smile.

The results of your gummy smile injections will generally last for 3-4 months or even longer in some cases. It’s important to note that this can vary from person to person. Once the injection begins to wear off after this period, you can come back for another treatment in order to keep your gummy smile at bay.

Muscle relaxant injections are a safe and proven treatment option for reducing the appearance of a gummy smile. Side effects are rare – and when they do occur, they’re minor and temporary.

In a small number of cases, minor bruising will occur at the site of the injection. This is easily concealed with makeup and will subside within a few days.
