To determine whether you would benefit from Picosure treatments, your skin type, concerns and medical history will need to be evaluated. From there, a tailored treatment plan is developed, ensuring you achieve your specific goals.
Prior to your Picosure treatment, it’s recommended that you avoid prolonged sun exposure, tanning beds and self-tanning lotions for at least a month before each session. Any products that contain retina, retinol and retinoid must also be avoided for 48 hours before your appointment.
On the day of your appointment, a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area before your session – this will need 30 minutes to take effect. This will ensure that your session is as comfortable as possible.
Before treatment can commence, the laser will need to be adjusted based on your unique skin concerns. The treated area is then cleaned and protective eyewear is supplied before the applicator is applied to the skin.
The average Picosure session lasts about 20 minutes and several sessions are required to improve the texture and appearance of the skin. If multiple areas need to be treated, this will extend the treatment time. Treatments are spaced 4 – 6 weeks apart to give the skin time to heal.
Following your treatment, you can expect the treated area to feel sensitive and appear slightly red. To avoid irritating the skin even further, it’s best not to rub or scratch the treated area during the first day or two. Patients also won’t be able to apply makeup to the treated area as this can further aggravate the skin. Mineral makeup can generally be used but this depends on how sensitive your skin is.
We will provide you with a post-laser cream to keep your skin hydrated and to promote healing after your appointment. Thereafter, try to stick to unscented moisturisers and a high-quality sunscreen. Over and above keeping your skin moisturised, it’s important to keep the treated area clean. Use a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water to keep the area clean in between sessions.
Patients can return home or go back to work directly after their appointment, provided they’re fine with their skin being slightly red.
