Story
For this patient, the concern was not her smile itself — it was how much gum showed when she smiled naturally.
She felt self-conscious in photos and often found herself smiling more cautiously, especially in social settings. What she wanted was not a different smile, but a more balanced one. She still wanted to look expressive, warm, and like herself, just with less gum display and a softer overall appearance through the upper lip area.
At Medical Aesthetics 360, our doctors carried out a detailed assessment of her smile dynamics, upper lip movement, facial proportions, and the way the lip lifted during expression. This was an important part of the consultation, because a gummy smile can happen for different reasons. In some patients, it relates mainly to strong upper lip elevation. In others, tooth shape, gum position, or facial proportions may also play a role.
Different options were discussed depending on the cause and the patient’s goals. For suitable patients, treatment aimed at reducing excessive upper lip pull can be a very effective non-surgical option. In some cases, smile balance may also involve broader facial assessment, including lip support or surrounding proportions, depending on the anatomy and presentation.
She appreciated that the consultation was not rushed and that the focus was on achieving a natural-looking result. She did not want a stiff or unnatural smile. She wanted to keep her personality and expression, while making the smile look more proportionate and less gum-dominant.
A personalised treatment plan was recommended following assessment, with the goal of softening excessive gum show and creating a more balanced, confident smile.
Visible Results
At review, the smile appeared softer and more proportionate, with less gum display on smiling. The upper lip movement looked more controlled and balanced, while her overall expression remained natural and expressive.
Importantly, the result did not take away from her smile. Instead, it helped the smile look more relaxed, more harmonious, and less dominated by the upper gum area. She still looked like herself — just more comfortable and more confident in the way she smiled.
This case highlights how gummy smile treatment, smile correction, and non-surgical lip and smile balancing can be tailored to the individual after proper medical assessment.
