What are exosomes—and what does the label really tell you?

Exosomes are tiny membrane-bound particles involved in cell communication. They may carry proteins, lipids and nucleic acids, but two products carrying the same marketing name can be biologically very different.

Where did it come from?

Research has examined extracellular vesicles from adipose-derived cells, platelets, plants and other sources. Findings from one source cannot automatically validate another.

02 · IDENTITY

Is it truly characterised?

The scientific term “exosome” should ideally reflect how particles formed and were characterised. Many commercial preparations are more accurately described as extracellular-vesicle-containing products.

03 · FORMULATION

What else is in it?

A preparation may contain peptides, proteins, conditioned-media components or skincare ingredients. Any visible effect may belong to the complete formula, not one fashionable word.

04 · DELIVERY

How is it being used?

Evidence for topical application after a controlled procedure cannot be transferred automatically to intact-skin skincare or injection of a different formulation.

What are exosome treatments used for?

Online searches often group every use together. In practice, skin rejuvenation, acne-scar support, post-procedure recovery and hair loss are separate questions with different evidence and treatment pathways.

Small human studies have reported short-term changes in hydration, elasticity, wrinkles, pigmentation or overall appearance. These are skin-quality goals—not proof of surgical lifting or permanent anti-ageing.

Microneedling creates controlled microchannels. A 28-person randomised split-face study found greater short-term improvement when a specific adipose-derived exosome-containing solution was paired with microneedling than when saline was used on the comparison side.

That result is encouraging, but it does not prove that every “exosome facial” uses an equivalent product or protocol.

Morpheus8 combines microneedles with radiofrequency energy to target texture, selected scars and mild laxity. A 2025 split-face study used three RF microneedling sessions, then compared topical exosomes on one side with PRP on the other. Both sides improved, with no significant difference between them.

The useful lesson is choice—not superiority. Product quality, treatment settings and suitability still matter.

LASEMD & EXOSOMES

Fractional laser first, adjunct second

LaseMD uses a 1927 nm thulium wavelength to create microscopic non-ablative treatment zones for selected pigment and surface-quality concerns. Published exosome research includes fractional laser-assisted topical delivery, but not every study used LaseMD and not every formulation is interchangeable.

The laser setting and pigment-risk plan must be chosen for your skin before an adjunct is considered.

A skin booster usually refers to an intradermal skin-quality treatment. Exosome-containing preparations are often studied topically after another procedure. They may sit within one staged skin plan, but they are not automatically mixed, injected or substituted for one another.

Good planning separates hydration, pigment, texture, scarring and laxity rather than asking one treatment to do everything.

What does the research on exosome skin rejuvenation actually show?

Recent reviews report promising signals for wrinkles, pigmentation, hydration, elasticity and overall skin appearance. The most rigorous 2026 review identified 16 studies involving 503 participants, but judged the certainty of evidence low or very low because products, delivery methods, outcome measures and follow-up varied.

A positive short-term study does not establish long-term safety, an ideal dose or a universal treatment course. It also cannot tell us that a product with a different source or manufacturing process will behave the same way.

Balanced conclusion

Exosome-based and extracellular-vesicle treatments are promising adjuncts in aesthetic medicine. They are not yet standardised enough to support blanket claims such as “repairs every skin cell,” “reverses ageing” or “guarantees faster healing.”

A separate clinical question

Exosomes for hair loss: promising, but diagnosis still comes first

“Hair loss” is not one condition. Pattern hair loss, sudden shedding, patchy alopecia, inflammation, iron deficiency, thyroid disease, medication effects and scarring disorders do not share one treatment.

Where current interest is focused

Most clinical interest concerns androgenetic alopecia—male or female pattern hair loss—where follicles gradually miniaturise. Proposed exosome effects involve signalling pathways related to follicle cycling, inflammation and dermal papilla cells.

A 2025 systematic review found 11 clinical studies, including two randomised trials. Every included study reported improvement in at least one hair measure, but study sizes were small and exosome sources, delivery methods, follow-up and outcome measures varied substantially.

That makes exosomes an emerging discussion, not a proven replacement for established medical care, PRP or hair transplantation when those options are more appropriate.

Early pattern thinning

May justify a hair and scalp assessment while follicles are still present and the diagnosis can be clarified.

Sudden or patchy loss

Needs medical assessment rather than an automatic cosmetic treatment package.

Advanced smooth baldness

Regenerative adjuncts cannot create unlimited new follicles; transplant assessment may be more realistic.

Separate topical use from injection

Evidence for topical use after microneedling or laser does not establish the safety of injecting a product. Route changes exposure, risk and regulatory considerations.

PATIENT

Check skin, scalp and health first

Active infection, inflamed skin, suspicious lesions, impaired healing, pregnancy, immune conditions, allergies and relevant medicines may change or postpone the plan.

Australian and international regulatory context

In Australia, whether a product is a cosmetic or therapeutic good depends on its claims, composition and use. Therapeutic goods generally require ARTG inclusion unless an exemption, approval or authority applies. Read the TGA guidance.

What are exosomes?
Exosomes are one subtype of extracellular vesicle: tiny membrane-bound particles involved in cell-to-cell communication. They can carry proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. In commercial aesthetics, the label “exosome” does not guarantee a standard source, composition, concentration or level of characterisation.
Is exosome treatment the same as stem cell treatment?
No. Exosomes are cell-free particles or particle-containing preparations; they are not living stem cells. Some products are described as stem-cell-derived because of the cells used during manufacture, but product source and processing still need to be verified.
What is an exosome facial?
“Exosome facial” is a broad marketing term, not one standard medical procedure. It often describes topical application of an exosome- or extracellular-vesicle-containing preparation after microneedling, RF microneedling or fractional laser. The base procedure, product and route should always be named separately.
Does microneedling with exosomes work?
Early human studies are encouraging. A small randomised split-face study found greater short-term improvement when an adipose-derived exosome-containing solution was paired with microneedling than when saline was paired with microneedling. The trial included 28 people, and the wider evidence remains limited by small studies and product differences.
Can exosomes be used after Morpheus8?
Some studies have assessed topical extracellular-vesicle or exosome preparations after RF microneedling. A 2025 split-face trial found that both topical exosomes and PRP improved measured skin outcomes after three RF microneedling sessions, without a significant difference between them. This does not establish that every exosome product is suitable after every Morpheus8 setting.
Can exosomes be combined with LaseMD?
Fractional lasers can create temporary microscopic treatment zones, and published studies have explored laser-assisted topical delivery of extracellular-vesicle preparations. Whether an adjunct is appropriate after LaseMD depends on the exact product, treatment intensity, skin barrier, pigmentation risk and aftercare plan.
Are exosomes the same as a skin booster?
No. “Skin booster” usually refers to an intradermal skin-quality treatment, while exosome products vary and are often studied as topical adjuncts after a procedure. They should not be mixed, injected or treated as interchangeable unless the exact formulation, route and regulatory status support that use.
Do exosomes help hair loss?
Preliminary studies report changes in hair density or thickness in some people with androgenetic alopecia, but sources, delivery methods and outcomes vary. A 2025 systematic review found only 11 clinical studies, including two randomised trials. Exosomes remain an emerging option and should not replace diagnosis or established hair-loss care.
Are exosomes better than PRP for skin or hair?
Current evidence does not show that exosomes are universally better. PRP uses a preparation from your own blood and has a broader clinical evidence base for androgenetic hair loss. Exosome products avoid a blood draw but have greater uncertainty around product standardisation, source and long-term evidence.
How many exosome treatment sessions are needed?
There is no evidence-based universal course. Published protocols differ by product, concern and delivery method. A plan should be based on the main procedure, your response and the evidence for the exact formulation rather than an automatic package.
What is the downtime after an exosome facial?
Downtime usually comes mainly from the paired procedure. Microneedling, Morpheus8 and LaseMD can cause redness, warmth, swelling, dryness, pinpoint marks or flaking. An adjunct can also cause irritation or sensitivity. Recovery varies with treatment depth, intensity and skin response.
