Fractional Erbium Resurfacing for Mixed Textural Acne Scarring in a 32-Year-Old Man

Story

This 32-year-old patient had lived with acne scarring since his early twenties and felt the marks had become part of how he saw himself. His main concerns were mixed textural scars on the cheeks, including shallow boxcar scars, finer pitted scars, and areas of uneven surface texture that gave the skin a rougher look than he wanted. He said that although the scars were old, they still affected how confident he felt in social settings and close-up conversation.

He had tried skincare and lighter treatments before, but wanted something more targeted for the surface irregularity. On examination, the scarring pattern suggested that improving the top layers of texture could make a noticeable difference to how the skin looked overall. Fractional Erbium resurfacing was selected to help refine the skin surface and improve the appearance of the visible textural changes, while supporting a smoother-looking finish.

What made this case relatable was how subtle but persistent the issue felt. It was not severe active acne anymore — it was the long tail of it. He felt his skin never quite looked as clean or as clear as it should, even when it was healthy. He wanted a result that looked natural, not dramatic — just a better version of his own skin.

Visible Results

Following treatment, the skin looked fresher, smoother, and more finely textured, with the scarred areas appearing less noticeable and the overall complexion more even. The shallower scars became less visually prominent, and the surface looked softer and more consistent from one area to the next. The improvement gave the cheeks a cleaner, more refined appearance, reducing the roughened look that acne scarring can leave behind. Altogether, the skin appeared more polished and more balanced, with a healthier-looking finish that was easier to appreciate both up close and in natural light.
