What is actually making the face look less firm?

Skin tightening is most useful when reduced elasticity or mild to moderate laxity is genuinely contributing. A blurred jawline or heavier lower face can also come from volume change, fat distribution, muscle activity or bone structure.

Loose-looking neck skin

Ultrasound or radiofrequency may support gradual firmness in selected patients. Prominent platysmal bands, excess fat or advanced loose skin often need a different plan.

Crepey skin and fine lines

Thermage FLX or Sofwave may be considered when skin quality and elasticity are central. Surface treatments may be added when texture remains the dominant issue.

Texture, pores or acne scars

RF microneedling may be more relevant than a needle-free lifting device when remodelling is the priority, provided the additional recovery and risk profile are acceptable.

Volume loss and facial hollowing

Energy-based tightening cannot replace lost facial support. A contour assessment may be more useful when flattening or hollowing is driving the appearance.

Advanced laxity

Non-surgical devices cannot remove excess skin or reproduce a facelift or neck lift. A surgical opinion may offer a more realistic answer when change is substantial.

Evidence and limitations

Published improvement is usually modest, not facelift-sized

Evidence quality varies by device, settings, outcome measure and follow-up. Many studies are small, industry-linked or do not directly compare technologies, so marketing claims should not be treated as head-to-head proof.

What a systematic review found

A 2023 review of microfocused ultrasound included 16 studies, all involving women. It reported improvement in mildly to moderately lax facial skin, while patient-rated change was generally mild and long-term evidence beyond one year was limited.

Recovery and results

Minimal downtime does not mean zero risk

Needle-free procedures and RF microneedling have different recovery profiles. Results develop gradually, and a stronger treatment is not automatically a better or more natural choice.

Surface recovery is often limited. Tenderness, swelling, redness, tingling, numbness or temporary altered sensation can occur, and discomfort during treatment varies.

Non-invasive radiofrequency
