Acne scars and acne marks: texture versus colour

After acne clears, the remaining changes may involve texture, colour, or both. Depressed or raised scars differ from flat red, brown or dark marks, so the first step is to identify what you are seeing before discussing treatment.

  • Ice-pick scars: narrow, deep pits.
  • Boxcar scars: wider depressions with defined edges.
  • Rolling scars: broader depressions with sloping edges.
  • Raised scars: thicker tissue above the skin surface.
  • Post-acne marks: flat colour changes that can occur alongside textural scars.

The American Academy of Dermatology explains the difference between acne scars and post-acne colour changes.

What a doctor-led assessment considers

Assessment considers whether the main concern is a depression, raised scar, pigmentation, redness or active acne. Skin tone, sensitivity, previous reactions and treatment history also matter.

Tell your clinician what bothers you most, whether the area is changing and what you have already tried. This helps define the concern before discussing suitable options.

Match the pathway to the concern

Improving colour and changing scar texture are different goals. An approach aimed at pigmentation may leave a depression unchanged; a procedure targeting texture may not resolve all residual colour. Mixed concerns may therefore need a staged plan.

Your clinician can explain the purpose, limitations and alternatives for each option. You do not need to select a device in advance. Explore our acne scar assessment and treatment page for the clinic pathway.

Recovery depends on the procedure

There is no single recovery estimate for all acne-scar procedures. Expected skin reactions and time away from usual activities depend on the procedure, treatment depth, settings and individual healing.

Ask for procedure-specific advice on skincare, makeup, sun protection and follow-up. Read our acne scar treatment options and recovery guide to prepare questions; follow the instructions provided for your own treatment.

Prepare for your consultation

Bring your skincare list, previous treatment details and any upcoming events. Ask which changes are scars or marks, what improvement is realistic, what recovery may involve and how progress will be reviewed.
